What Can I Put Into My Dumpster?.

Before you can think about what you can put into a dumpster, you should know some basic facts about the types and their uses.  Dumpsters are perfect when there is a large amount of debris which must be removed, that is more debris than can be left for normal trash removal services.  They are also convenient in that most trash facilities will not only deliver them to your site, but they will haul them away to the landfill as well.  The two most common types of dumpsters are roll-off dumpsters and front load dumpsters.  Your needs, such as type of waste, length of use, and storage space for the dumpster will dictate which one you choose.

Roll-off dumpsters are most commonly used for large jobs which are temporary, such as construction or home remodeling.  Front load dumpsters are used when no regular trash removal service is available and are usually retained on a more permanent basis such as may be found at apartment complexes, retail stores, offices, etc.  Both come in a variety of sizes as well.  The roll-off containers will be much larger and are labeled by cubic yardage from 10 yards, 20 yards, 30 yards and 40 yards.  A 40 yard roll-off dumpster will be approximately eight feet tall.  Front load dumpsters are also labeled by yardage from 2 yards, 4 yards, 8 yards, and 10 yards.  The 10 yard front load dumpster will also be eight feet tall but not as wide as the larger roll-off dumpsters.

Obviously, you’re going to placing much larger amounts and sizes of debris in a roll-off dumpster.   Most often this will consist of solid waste material.   Common items placed in roll-off dumpsters may be yard waste, wood, drywall, carpeting, wire, foam, flooring, roofing materials, some household appliances, tree trimming and brush cuttings.  For the front load dumpster, these are more often used for regular garbage, small amounts of yard waste, cardboard, paper, plastics, etc. These dumpsters may also be used for recycling containers housing either cardboard or paper or aluminum and/or plastics.  Just as important as what you can put in either dumpster is what you cannot put in them.

For both roll-off and front load dumpsters, some items are prohibited.  These are often items which do not degrade in a landfill or items which are toxic to humans and to the environment.  Additionally, there are usually many local and state laws which prohibit certain items as well.  Upon renting a dumpster, the trash service should provide you with a list of prohibited items.  In some areas, certain trash services may remove waste such as Freon, as used in air conditioners, tires, certain household appliances, and computers for an extra fee.  However, as a rule of thumb, the following items are almost always prohibited:  free liquids such as paint or cleaners, toxic substances, infectious materials, biomedical materials, explosives such as fireworks or live ammunition, flammable materials, volatile compounds or liquids, and radioactive substances.
